Earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 hits Istanbul
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul, accompanied by a series of aftershocks.
The epicenter was located near Silivri in the Sea of Marmara. The tremors were felt not only in the megacity but also in several neighboring provinces.
Turkey's Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, reported on social media platform X that experts from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and other relevant agencies immediately began assessing the aftermath.
The main shock occurred at approximately 12:50 PM. Strong tremors were felt in the Ataköy area, located on the western side of the city. Walls shook, chandeliers swayed, furniture creaked, and there was a brief power outage.
Many residents fled their buildings in panic—some descended by stairs, while others, despite warnings, used the elevator. At 1:03 PM, a secondary tremor with a magnitude of 4.4 struck, forcing people to move away from the buildings again, with some even attempting to drive their cars farther from potential collapses.
There were also reports of internet outages in the city. According to AFAD, the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of around seven kilometers. Damage assessment and evaluation of potential consequences are ongoing.
