Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 11 November, Director of the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies (ISMI), Eldor Aripov, held a meeting with the Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Ambassador Thomas Greminger.
Ambassador Thomas Greminger served as the Secretary General of the OSCE from July 2017 to July 2020. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Director-General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation under the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Greminger holds a PhD in History from the University of Zurich and is the author of numerous publications on military history, conflict management, peacekeeping, development, and human rights.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the outcomes of extensive reforms carried out in Uzbekistan. It was emphasized that the country has undergone profound transformations in recent years. The economy is developing dynamically, new opportunities for entrepreneurs are emerging, and measures for social protection of citizens are being improved.
Particular attention was given to the regional policies of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Thanks to Uzbekistan's focus on fostering good-neighborly relations and resolving disputes with neighboring countries, Central Asia is becoming an increasingly consolidated and stable region.
Considering the GCSP's mandate, Thomas Greminger expressed interest in close collaboration with ISMI on projects aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in Central Asia. He showed particular interest in enhancing connectivity between Central and South Asia and finding viable solutions for integrating Afghanistan into regional economic ties.
Mutual interest was also expressed in organizing internships for ISMI staff at GCSP and establishing collaboration in training specialists in international relations.
