Deputies express their interest in and support for the project “Parliamentary Development Assistance”
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Presentation of the UNDP project “Parliamentary development activities” has taken place in Legislative chamber of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The event was attended by chairmen of committees, deputies and personnel of Secretariat of Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan as well as by representatives of the UNDP Project.

The main purpose set for the presentation was to familiarize the participants with aims and objectives of the project, set the key areas of cooperating with Legislative Chamber based on the approved Program of activities on implementing the Concept of further deepening democratic reforms and building a civil society formation, introduced in the presentation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan during the joint session of Legislative Chamber and Senate on 12 November, 2011.

The meeting was moderated by the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs and Interparliamentary Relations, National Coordinator of the project "Parliamentary Development Assistance”, Gulyamov L. Y. Having welcomed the participants of the meeting, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, Muhammadiev U. N. noted the timeliness and importance of the project in improving the informational and analytical capacities of the Parliament of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Welcoming speeches on the behalf of the management of Legislative Chamber were followed by the presentation of the UNDP project “Parliamentary development assistance” delivered by the project manager, Khakimov M. M. Specifically, he has outlined that the project consists of the four components aimed at, first, strengthening and further development of the parliament’s potential, second, assistance in enhancing the oversight-analytical activity of the parliament, third, strengthening the representative function of the parliament, and fourth, increasing effectiveness of Secretariats of both Chambers.

The meeting included a discussion of the experience of UNDP in supporting parliamentary development in the world, crucial issues of cooperation between the Legislative Chamber and the UNDP in building a democratic state, as well as matters of technical assistance to the Secretariat of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis.

Participants of the presentation have expressed a particular interest in specific activities of the project planned for each of its four parts. In particular, lively discussion evolved around the idea of creating an analytical research center of Parliamentarism. In addition, participants made a number of specific proposals for improving the work of the project.

Almost all the deputies touched in their speeches the need to further strengthen the capacity of Parliament by improving its informational-analytical activity, enhance the working methods of the deputies with the electorate as well as conducting relevant training.

The meeting has also involved a presentation of a handbook "Basics of activity of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Uzbekistan” published with support of UNDP in Uzbek and Russian languages.
