Delhi announces death of former President of India

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 coronavirus earlier this month, died at the age of 84, the ex-president’s son Abhijit Mukherjee said on Monday.

“It is with pain in my heart that I inform you that my father Sri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away, despite all the efforts of the hospital doctors and the prayers ... of people from all over India. I thank you all!" - wrote his son on his Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the death of Mukherjee. “India mourns the death of Pranab Mukherjee. He left an indelible mark on the development of our country. An excellent scientist, an outstanding statesman, he was admired by representatives of the entire political spectrum and all sectors of society,” Modi tweeted.

Modi also expressed his gratitude for Mukherjee’s “support and blessing” since taking office as prime minister in 2014.

According to the Indian media, on Monday morning, a hospital in Delhi reported that the ex-president’s condition was deteriorating. He suffered septic shock with a pulmonary infection.

Mukherjee was hospitalized on 10 August, and that day he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain. At the hospital, he was also diagnosed with a coronavirus. Mukherjee has developed a lung infection and kidney dysfunction in recent days, according to doctors.

Pranab Mukherjee served as President of India from 2012-2017.
