Decline in Uzbekistan’s car market: primary market more stable than secondary

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – In June, total vehicle sales across Uzbekistan, according to CERR estimates, decreased by 13.6%. Year-on-year, activity dropped by 1.4 times, partly explained by seasonal factors.

The primary market for new passenger vehicles shows more stable dynamics compared to the secondary market. Of particular interest is the electric vehicle segment, where despite a 28% decline in sales in the primary market, the secondary market showed a 2.4% growth.

The Center for Economic Research and Reforms regularly analyzes the situation in Uzbekistan’s automobile market.

According to the study for June, total vehicle sales in the country decreased by 13.6% to nearly 87 thousand units. Year-on-year, activity decreased by 1.4 times.

This trend may be partially due to seasonal factors, as the summer period traditionally sees a decrease in business activity.

Situation in the passenger car segment

After a slight decline earlier in the year, passenger car sales in May increased by 14% compared to April. However, in June, there was again a decrease in sales volumes by 13.3% to 77.6 thousand units. Year-on-year, the passenger car market also decreased by 1.4 times.

Regional dynamics show that in June, the largest sales decline was noted in Surkhandarya and Andijan regions, as well as in the Republic of Karakalpakstan – averaging 22%. At the same time, sales in Khorezm and Navoi regions increased by 7% compared to the same period last year.

For the first six months of 2024, passenger car sales in Uzbekistan amounted to 580 thousand units, which is 19% less than in the same period last year. This may be due not only to reduced demand for used cars but also to the complexity of registration processes and increased vehicle registration costs.

On the secondary market for passenger cars, which accounts for 97.3% of total sales, tightening requirements and increased registration costs affected the number of purchase and sale transactions, reflecting overall sales figures.

Primary market situation

In the primary market for passenger cars, sales in June decreased by 9% compared to May, exceeding 26 thousand units. Year-on-year, the decline in activity was 5.3%. Thus, the primary market for new passenger cars demonstrates more stable dynamics compared to the secondary market.

Sales of domestically produced new cars in June decreased by almost 10% compared to May. Year-on-year, the decrease was 0.8%, halting the sales growth observed in May.

The segment of foreign passenger cars is stagnating. In June, sales increased by 0.4% to 2.4 thousand units, but year-on-year, the decrease was about 34%.

Secondary market for passenger cars

The secondary market for passenger cars continues to show a decline in sales. In June, activity in this market decreased by 15.3% compared to the previous month, when the decrease was 3.4%. Approximately 51.5 thousand cars were sold in this segment, which is 1.6 times less than last year.

Electric vehicle market situation

In June, sales of electric vehicles decreased by 800 units compared to May, totaling 3 thousand units. However, year-on-year, sales of electric vehicles increased by 1.3 times.

In the primary market for electric vehicles in Uzbekistan, sales decreased by 28% in June, while the secondary market saw a 2.4% increase.
