Economy 24/04/2011 Deal on Central Asian-Persian Gulf transport corridor to be signed by end of April
First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Rustam Azimov
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Oman and Qatar will sign an agreement on creation of new international transport corridor, linking Central Asia with Persian Gulf, by the end of April 2011.

This was announced by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Rustam Azimov at the international conference “The Concept of Further Deepening of Democratic Reforms and Forming of Civil Society”.

As earlier reported, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov proposed to create transport corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman-Qatar and other states of Persian Gulf in Ashgabat on 19 October 2010.

It is planned that the corridor will pass through territory of Iran and it will link Central Asian countries with Iranian ports in Persian and Oman Gulfs.

According to the Uzbek side, the establishment of railway road communication from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to southern ports of Iran will help to create important transport network among the countries of Persian and Oman Gulfs and all Central Asian states.

Later in November 2011, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Oman hold the meeting to discuss issues related to formation of transport-communication corridor between the Central Asian region and Persian Gulf.

In February 2011, representatives of all five nations gathered in Tashkent and signed a draft agreement on creation of new transport corridor.
