Sports 05/02/2008 Davis Cup: Indians express concern over court

India’s non-playing captain Leander Paes, who had a good look of the DLTA centre court Monday where the tie will start Friday, seemed unsatisfied.

’Today, I went to DLTA and had a look at the court. It has long grass and I have asked them to chop it,’ Paes said on the sidelines of India’s training session at the National Sports Club of India (NSCI).

’They are watering the surface but I don’t know how much water the surface will absorb. Traditionally, the centre court at DLTA doesn’t absorb much water as there is a concrete surface underneath grass.’

Rohan Bopanna aired the same feeling and said that he prefers shorter grass on the surface.

’Like others, I too prefer short grass which will provide more bounce. I am just waiting to see the main court. Until and unless you play, you can’t assess anything,’ he said.

Bopanna, along with stand-by players Ashutosh Singh and Vishnu Vardhan, had an extended practice session Monday. Prakash Amritraj, however, did not practice as he is indisposed.
