Court verdict against 16 convicts in connection with events in Nukus to be announced today

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A court verdict against 16 convicts in connection with the events in the city of Nukus will be announced today. The Independent Commission asked that the defendants be convicted on the basis of the principle of humanity.

As previously reported, on 31 January 2023, the verdict of the court of the Republic of Karakalpakstan was announced against 22 persons accused of committing riots in the city of Nukus on 1-2 July 2022.

Defendants D. Tadzhimuratov, P. Shamshetov (deceased), S. Kalimov, S. Kaipov, A. Temirkhanov, S. Medetov, N. Sultamuratov, A. Tokymbetov, R. Bekmuratov, B. Seitniyazov, A. Adilbekov, P. Nurniyazov, N. Naipov, B. Kadyrbergenov, D. Dzhimuratov, K. Seitimov and their lawyers filed an appeal against the decision of the court of first instance.

Since 5 May 2023, members of the commission for studying the situation and events in the Republic of Karakalpakstan participated in the appeal proceedings, which took place in the Supreme Court.

The defendant’s verdict will be announced today.

The Independent Commission asked the President of the Court to impose a punishment in accordance with the criteria of justice, based on the principles of humanism, taking into account that they sincerely regret their actions, that they made the right conclusions and have minor children in their care, as well as their family and social status.
