Court May Restrict Travel Abroad for Suspects and Defendants

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a law introducing amendments and additions to certain national legal acts.

The legislation establishes new rules for temporarily restricting the right to leave Uzbekistan for certain individuals by court decision.

Under the updated provisions, this measure may be applied to a suspect, accused, or defendant if no pretrial detention has been imposed, but there are grounds to believe that the person may leave the country and, without valid reasons, evade participation in judicial proceedings.

A prosecutor, investigator, or inquiry officer may initiate a request for temporary travel restriction, providing justification for the necessity of this measure. The request must be reviewed in a closed court session within eight hours of submission.

Following the review, the judge issues a ruling on the temporary travel restriction or denies the request. The ruling may be appealed or challenged within 48 hours.

The law comes into force upon its official publication.
