COP28: a high-level meeting is organized to implement National Adaptation Plans

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A high-level event dedicated to the implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAP) was organized within the framework of the UN climate conference COP28.

The event was attended by the Executive Director of the United Nations Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) Simon Still, the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov, the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, the High Representative of the Office for the Least Developed Countries, Developing Countries landlocked and small island developing states Rabab Fatima, Minister of Environment, Water Resources and Fisheries of Chad Mahamat Abdelkerim Hanno, Minister of Green Economy and Environmental Protection of Zambia Collins Nzovu and others.

In his speech, Aziz Abdukhakimov said that Uzbekistan stands for taking measures for effective adaptation to climate change. The prospects for attracting resources and providing technical assistance in the development of legal acts were also discussed with the Convention Secretariat.

The main goal is to identify ideas and strategies that will help countries, including least developed countries, small islands, developing states and other vulnerable countries, adapt to climate change. The main aspects of transformation and acceleration of implementation of legal acts to achieve climate stability were also touched upon.

In turn, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Still emphasized the importance of NAPs for achieving climate sustainability. Heads of ministries from other countries also expressed their positions on key adaptation issues. The dialogue focused on the long-term use of resources.

In her speech, Rabab Fatima noted the need to promote initiatives such as National Adaptation Plans and regional cooperation during the Third UN Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Kigali (Rwanda) in June 2024. Also, the Minister of Green Economy and Environment of Zambia, Collins Nzovu, emphasized the need to build capacity for the integration of legal acts into development strategies and proposed optimizing the proposed mechanisms and risk assessments.

As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached to support the development of National Adaptation Plans by the UN Development Program in 30 countries of the world.
