Uzbekistan 25/07/2008 CIS Security Head on Cooperation With SCO and US Missile Defence

The USA intends to install a radar in the Czech republic and 10 interceptor missiles in Poland under the pretext of defence against the supposed threat from Iran. Russia is concerned that these systems will threaten its security.

"We have achieved good cooperation with the SCO and we have a long list of shared issues on which we can work together and the main task is to consolidate the efforts in the sphere of security with such an influential organization as the SCO. This is working out well for us," Bordyuzha said.

When commenting on the situation regarding the deployment of elements of the US missile defence system in Eastern Europe, Bordyuzha noted that this cannot but alarm the CSTO countries.

"With regard to the third positioning area - this is one of the elements of the work that is being carried out near the borders of CSTO member states to create new military infrastructure or to upgrade elements of the military infrastructure that has existed since the times of the Soviet Union. Of course, we are concerned when military facilities appear around the states and when serious structures are being created, such as positioning areas of missile defence, which could be transformed in various ways. Naturally, this affects the security of the states and we are taking this into account in our actions," he said.

The CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
