Uzbekistan 08/10/2007 CIS security bloc urges peaceful resolution of Iran nuclear issue

The heads of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization [CSTO] express serious concern about the situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear programme and the situation in Afghanistan.

"The situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear programme is causing serious concern. We call for the strict fulfillment of obligations envisaged by international agreements. At the same time, we call for settling this problem by exclusively peaceful means," says a jubilee declaration of the heads of the CSTO member states, signed at a summit in Dushanbe in connection with the 15th anniversary of [the signing of] the Collective Security Treaty.

The declaration notes that the heads of state are alarmed by "difficulties in the post-conflict settlement in Afghanistan, from where a threat of drugs and terrorism, which is a common threat for the entire international community, is continuing to emanate".

"In this connection, we urge all interested sides to join efforts to counter the drugs threat, including by holding joint operations on preventing drug trafficking," the heads of the CSTO member states note.

The CSTO member states are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
