Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Sergey Lebedev will head the CIS observer mission for the upcoming elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, scheduled for 27 October.

According to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee, Sergey Lebedev’s candidacy was approved by the decision of the CIS Council of Permanent Representatives.

The Executive Committee also clarified that the observer mission will monitor the electoral campaign at the invitation of the Uzbek side, in accordance with the Commonwealth agreements and Uzbekistan’s legislation.

The work of the observers will be based on the principles of openness, neutrality, and non-interference in the electoral process and internal affairs of the state.

The parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan will take place on 27 October, with the electoral campaign having started on 26 July.

For the first time in Uzbekistan’s history, elections will be conducted using a mixed majoritarian-proportional system. Out of 150 seats in the Legislative Chamber, 75 deputies will be elected from single-member constituencies, while the remaining 75 will be elected from a nationwide constituency based on votes cast for political parties.
