Uzbekistan 03/11/2007 China, Uzbekistan Sign Pacts To Boost Cooperation

China and Uzbekistan on Saturday signed 10 agreements in Tashkent aimed at increasing cooperation between the two countries both on the economic and political fronts.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyaev signed the agreements that also focused on technology, public health, finance, transportation, water supply and environmental protection.

Wen said, "China highly values its ties with Uzbekistan and will endeavor to boost bilateral cooperation based on the principles of equality, mutual trust, mutual benefit and common development."

He added, "China will expand its import of cotton from Uzbekistan, grant the country the tourist destination status and support its efforts to join the World Trade Organization at an early date."

Mirziyaev said Uzbekistan will continue to adhere to the one-China policy and will support China in its positions against Taiwan and Tibet.

Wen and Uzbek President Islam Karimov met a day before the signing of the agreements and both vowed to promote take the relationship of their countries "to a higher level."
