Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — China has completed construction of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, now the longest high-speed tunnel in the world, spanning 22 kilometers, Xinhua reports.
Located in the challenging mountainous terrain of the Xinjiang region in northwestern China, the tunnel is part of a large-scale transportation corridor aimed at improving logistics and connectivity in this region, known for its harsh climatic conditions.
According to China Daily, construction of the tunnel took over seven years and required advanced technologies and equipment to address significant geological challenges such as high seismic activity and extreme temperature fluctuations.
As highlighted by Global Times, the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is a key segment of the high-speed rail line connecting the cities of Urumqi and Korla. This line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the cities, enhancing accessibility for both residents and tourists.
One notable feature of the tunnel is its eco-conscious construction approach. Special drilling and ground-reinforcement methods were employed to minimize environmental impact. Moreover, as South China Morning Post notes, the project was executed with strict adherence to energy-saving standards.
Experts emphasize that the completion of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel marks a significant milestone in China’s efforts to improve infrastructure in its western regions. Beyond its transportation benefits, the project opens new opportunities for economic development in Xinjiang and surrounding areas.
According to Xinhua, the high-speed rail line is expected to begin operations next year, marking a new chapter in China’s transportation advancements and reinforcing its position as a global leader in infrastructure projects.
