During the webinar, the essence and significance of the Resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted at the initiative of the Republic of Uzbekistan on 14 December 2022, which recognizes the leading role of national parliaments in the implementation of the SDGs, envisages the issues of expanding dialogue and cooperation between governments and parliaments to fully implement the Global Agenda for the period up to 2030.

During the event, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, UN Deputy Secretary General and ESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Salsia Alisjabana, EEC Executive Secretary Olga Algaerova, Director of the EEC Sustainable Energy Department Dario Liguti, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Development of the Aral Sea Region and Ecology Bory Alikhanov, and also a number of representatives of international organizations made speeches.

“For the first time in history, an important document has been adopted that highlights the critical role of parliaments in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The resolution calls on member states to fulfill the tasks defined in 13 directions. The document assigns a special role to national parliaments, which are endowed with legislative, control and representative functions. It is they who can stimulate the development of the economy, influence the effective implementation of social policy, provide access to high-quality medical services and education on the principle of “leaving no one behind”. In general, the Resolution is a kind of guide for parliamentarians of the world, which will allow them to mobilize their efforts to monitor the implementation of national indicators, - said Tanzila Narbayeva in her video message.

The Chairwoman of the Senate called on countries to develop appropriate road maps, taking into account national content, which would contribute to more effective implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the SDGs.

All participants of the event agreed on the need to strengthen the interaction between parliaments and governments, take the necessary measures and use funds to accelerate the implementation of the Global Agenda 2030.

At the end of the event, the participants put forward a number of proposals. Among them, initiatives can be noted regarding the activation of the work of parliaments on the development and implementation of state policy in the implementation of national SDGs, the expansion of the role and participation of legislative bodies in the formation and distribution of the budget for the implementation of SDG activities, the creation of a special platform in parliaments that allows tracking progress in achieving national SDGs.
