Chairperson of the Senate meets with the UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 12 May 2023, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbayeva received acting UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Consuelo Vidal Bruce.

During the conversation, the current state and prospects for cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the UN and its specialized agencies were discussed. In particular, attention was paid to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring gender equality, as well as environmental issues, including mitigation of the consequences of the Aral Sea tragedy.

It was noted that the efforts of Uzbekistan to address topical issues of regional and global importance, the initiatives put forward by the President of the country on topical issues on the international agenda, are supported by the UN. This, in turn, means that relationships with this authoritative structure are characterized by consistency.

The Chairperson of the Senate emphasized that constructive cooperation is developing with the UN and its specialized agencies and institutions operating in our country. The political dialogue has been especially intensified. This is evident from the participation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the general discussions held within the framework of the 72nd, 75th and 76th sessions of the UN General Assembly over the past five years. In this regard, based on the experience of the UN, the importance of enhancing the role of civil society institutions, strengthening the activity of women, as well as strengthening joint efforts to support youth was emphasized.

During the conversation, an exchange of views took place on various areas of effective cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN, including the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, it was noted that the Parliamentary Commission regularly monitors the activities of the government to implement the National Goals and Tasks in the field of sustainable development.

They also talked about the preparation this year and the discussion in the parliament of the second Voluntary National Review of Uzbekistan.

In turn, Consuelo Vidal Bruce expressed her gratitude for the sincere reception and highly appreciated the socio-economic reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan. It was emphasized that cooperation between our country and the UN is developing at a new stage, while the role of the parliament in achieving the SDGs is important, and the establishment of a regular dialogue in this regard is effective in all respects. It was also noted that the UN is ready to continue providing assistance in areas of interest to Uzbekistan.

At the end of the meeting, which was held in a friendly atmosphere, an agreement was reached to continue the systemic dialogue, expand projects aimed at sustainable development, protection and promotion of human rights and, in general, strengthen cooperation.
