Sports 27/06/2007 Chagaev to battle Ibragimov in heavyweight unification

Ruslan Chagaev and Sultan Ibragimov will meet in the ring sometime in October to unify two parts of the heavyweight championship.

A press conference for the fight, which is expected to take place in Moscow, Russia, is scheduled for Thursday. It will be the first unification bout between two European-born fighters and the first heavyweight unification fight held outside of the United States.

The last unification bout in the heavyweight division came in 1999 when Lennox Lewis fought Evander Holyfield.

Chagaev captured the WBA crown with a majority decision over Russian Nikolay Valuev on April 14. The native of Uzbekistan, who resides in Hamburg, Germany, has a record of 23-0-1 with 17 knockouts.

Ibragimov earned the WBO portion of the title with a unanimous decision over Shannon Briggs earlier this month in Atlantic City. The 32-year-old Russian is also unbeaten with a mark of 21-0-1 and 17 knockouts.

The holders of the other major heavyweight belts are Wladimir Klitschko (IBF) and Oleg Maskaev (WBC). Klitschko is slated to fight Lamon Brewster on 7 July in Germany, while Maskaev’s next bout is scheduled for the fall against Samuel Peter.
