Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan has published the list of senators elected from the regions. The first session of the Senate will be held on 19 November.
The senators were elected at joint meetings of deputies from the Jokargy Kenes of Karakalpakstan and the councils of regions and Tashkent, which took place from 7 to 12 November.
As a result, 51 senators were elected from the regions, instead of the previously planned 56. In Karakalpakstan, Andijan, Bukhara, Syrdarya, and Khorezm regions, three senators were elected instead of four. Following amendments to the Constitution, each region is now required to have an equal number of senators—four instead of six. The total number of Senate members has been reduced from 100 to 65.
The Central Election Commission noted that 56.6% of the new senators are over 60 years old, while 41.6% are between the ages of 40 and 60. The youngest senator, head of the Youth Agency Alisher Sa’dullayev, is only 30 years old.
As usual, the list of elected senators includes the chair of the Jokargy Kenes of Karakalpakstan, as well as the khokims (governors) of the regions and the city of Tashkent.
On 16 November, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev appointed an additional nine senators to the Senate, in contrast to the previous constitutional provisions, which allowed the president to appoint 16 senators. Six of these senators were appointed by the president in early 2020 following the parliamentary elections of 2019, including Kudratilla Rafikov, Sadik Safaev, and Alisher Sa’dullayev.
According to the CEC, the first session of the new Senate will take place on 19 November.
