Car market of Uzbekistan — review of CERR

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) analyzes the situation on the automobile market of Uzbekistan on a monthly basis.

The review of the automobile market of Uzbekistan is one of the research areas of the CERR, which presents the dynamics of sales of vehicles of both domestic production and foreign cars. The data is presented both for the reporting month and for the period from the beginning of the year to the reporting month. In addition, data for the same period last year are provided to track market dynamics.

In December, the sales growth trend that began at the beginning of last year was interrupted. However, despite the decline in activity in the last month of 2022, the demand for cars remains quite high. During the year, the number of sales showed a record growth of 87% and amounted to 1.4 million vehicles, which is 2 times higher than the previous year. 

In December, the total number of vehicles sold exceeded 107 thousand, with a decline of 32% by November. One of the factors reducing activity in the car market was the temporary suspension by UzAuto Motors of contracting for Chevrolet Lacetti, Cobalt, Damas and Labo cars.

In total, since the beginning of the year, car sales in the republic have increased by 2 times compared to the same period last year. 

The situation in the primary and secondary car market 

December was marked by a significant decrease in sales in the primary car market, the number of registered vehicles decreased by 50% over the month. At the same time, the decline compared to the same period last year was almost 40%. 

The drop in sales in the secondary car market turned out to be less acute than in the primary one. At the same time, the secondary car market has more than doubled in a year.

In December last year, more than 91 thousand cars were sold on the secondary market, which is 28% less than a month earlier. 

In general, in 2022, more than 312 thousand cars were sold on the primary market, which is 46% more than a year earlier. 1.1 million cars were sold on the secondary market, which is 2.4 times more than in the previous year.

The primary market of domestic passenger cars and foreign cars

Sales of new passenger cars of domestic brands in December amounted to 13.4 thousand, which is 40% less compared to the same period last year.

December sales of new foreign-made cars significantly decreased by 53% and amounted to 1.4 thousand, compared to the same period of the previous year, the decline was 43%.

In 2022, the growth in sales of new cars of domestic production exceeded 268 thousand, which is almost 49% more than a year earlier. In general, over the year, the Uzbek market of new foreign cars grew by 35% to 18.4 thousand.
