Car market of Uzbekistan — CERR overview

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) analyzes the situation on the car market of Uzbekistan on a monthly basis.

In January 2023, the total number of passenger cars sold amounted to 118 thousand, with an increase of 18% by December last year. Significant growth was observed in Samarkand – by 85%, Ferghana – 44% and Namangan regions – 31%.

Compared to January 2022, the number of passenger car sales increased by almost 20%.

The Center for Economic Research and Reforms has revised the methodology for collecting data on the car market for the period 2021-2022. In particular, the market of passenger cars and electric vehicles is disaggregated from the total number of vehicles.

Let us remind that motor vehicles include passenger cars (including electric vehicles), trucks and special vehicles, buses and minibuses.

Therefore, the passenger car market for 2021-2022 has grown by 2 times from 647 thousand (previously 692 thousand) to 1.3 million (previously 1.4 million).

The situation in the primary and secondary car market

The number of registered cars on the primary market increased by 71% in a month. Compared to January 2022, the growth of the primary market was 5.6%.

At the same time, sales of new cars of domestic production since the beginning of the year amounted to 23.4 thousand, an increase of 71% (compared to January 2022 – an increase of 2%).

Sales of new foreign-made cars amounted to 2.5 thousand, with an increase of 75% by December 2022 (compared to January 2022 - an increase of 60%).

In January of this year, 92 thousand cars were sold on the secondary market, which is 8.9% more than in December last year. Compared to January 2022, the growth was 24%.

Electric vehicles market overview

In January 2023, sales of passenger electric vehicles amounted to 431 units, which is 3% (+13 units) more than in December 2022. The largest number of electric vehicles sold was observed in Tashkent – 319 units, Tashkent (44 units) and Ferghana (12 units) regions.

Compared to January 2022, the number of sales of electric vehicles increased by 85% (+198 units).

The growing demand for electric passenger cars is due to the exemption of electric vehicles from customs duty, excise tax and motor vehicle charges. From 2021 to 2022, the market grew 3 times, from 1.7 thousand to 5.9 thousand passenger electric vehicles.

According to CERR estimates, further growth of the electric vehicle market is predicted due to the measures taken by the government. In particular, support is provided for the organization of domestic production of electric vehicles and spare parts, and compensation will be paid to buyers to cover interest on a loan for the purchase of domestic electric vehicles.

In addition, in order to stimulate the production of electric vehicles in Uzbekistan in 2023-2025, it is planned to purchase electric vehicles by state bodies, local khokimiyats and enterprises in which the state share does not exceed 50%.

For the reference: The overview of the car market of Uzbekistan is one of the research areas of the CERR, which presents the dynamics of sales of passenger cars and electric vehicles of both domestic production and foreign cars. The data is presented both for the reporting month and for the period from the beginning of the year to the reporting month. In addition, data for the same period last year are provided to track market dynamics.
