Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Presentation of “ICT Glossary", prepared by the UNDP’s “Assisting the Government of Uzbekistan in the formulation and implementation of ICT for development policy” Project with the assistance of the Coordination Council for development of computerization and information and communication technologies and Communication and Information Agency of Uzbekistan was held at the Communications History Museum on 17 June 2010.

More than 5 years have passed since the release of the first edition of “ICT Glossary” by UNDP in Uzbekistan. Given the rapid development of the ICT industry, the emergence of a range of modern terms, covering various aspects of ICT development, as well as increased interest of population in such publications, there appeared a need to develop a new edition of the glossary. Thus, during 2009-2010 ICTP Project of UNDP, within the framework of activities on raising awareness among government officials, educators, students of various educational institutions and other segments of the population in the use of ICTs in their professional activities and daily life, prepared the second edition of the glossary in Uzbek language, which is although a logical continuation of the first edition, but appears to the reader in a new conceptual form.

According to Damir Amirov, the Research coordinator on e-governance at ICTP Project, the Glossary contains more than 4000 modern terms and concepts, as well as frequently used abbreviations. A distinctive aspect of the second edition (first edition was released in 2004) is the increased graphical presentation of the terms through the use of more than 450 diagrams, drawings, photographs and logos.

20 coloured subject tabs covering various aspects of ICT development, English-Uzbek and Russian-Uzbek dictionaries of terms, history of ICT development in the world and in Uzbekistan are presented in individual blocks in the Glossary. In addition to “traditional” areas of ICT (hardware and software, computer networks, computer graphics, data storage devices) the Glossary also includes up-to-date topics such as biometric technology, satellite navigation systems, electronic government, free and open source software and telemedicine.

It should be noted that in the current edition also the structure of the Glossary and its qualitative and quantitative content has been refined based on international experience in the development of such glossaries and according to the comments and recommendations received from readers of the first edition.

Given the practical and educational nature of the Glossary as well as its focus on further development of the subject terminology in Uzbek language, it is expected that the Glossary will serve as both a handbook and a textbook on modern computer technologies for all, ICT professionals and those interested, due to its usability, good systematization of the information and accessible and understandable definitions.
