British Ambassador congratulates Uzbekistan with New Year
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Great Britain to Tashkent Rupert Joy congratulated the people of Uzbekistan with the New Year.

Rupert Joy said: “A very Happy New Year from the British Embassy in Tashkent! Thank you for following our website, facebook and twitter communications in 2011. I would like to take a few moments to look back on 2011, as we move into a new year.”

He said: “2011 has been a year of extraordinary global events. We have seen the remarkable chain of popular revolutions that swept through the Arab world. We have seen the dreadful tsunami that caused so much loss of life in Japan. And we have seen the economic turmoil that continues to affect the countries of the eurozone”.

“The UK’s economy – still the world’s sixth-largest – has taken its fair share of pain. Economic prospects in 2012 are likely to remain challenging for the UK, as for many other countries in the world. But, unlike our eurozone partners, the Government of the UK can set its own currency and interest rate policies. That helps,” he added.

“And the UK has fundamental strengths to build on – world-class universities, a leading pharmaceuticals industry, high-tech manufacturing, nano-technology, hydrocarbons and mining expertise, a dynamic green economy, creative industries, major retailers and a host of specialised small firms. London is still the world’s largest financial centre. It remains a highly attractive business destination. The London Stock Exchange has the highest number of listed international companies in the world,” envoy underlined.

Joy stated: “The UK is a strong believer in building an open, inter-connected global economy. We are convinced that is the best route to greater international growth and prosperity. In 2012, we will need to work even harder for that.”

“2012 promises to be an exciting year for Britain. Along with many other countries of the Commonwealth, we will celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 60th year on the throne. During the Diamond Jubilee in June, cultural events will take place all over the country, including a pageant on the River Thames. In July and August, London will host the Olympic Games for the third time. Britain will welcome around 15,000 athletes from 205 countries and many thousands of visitors. These events will be great opportunities to showcase what makes Britain one of the world’s most dynamic and innovative economies.

“The UK regards Uzbekistan as a potentially important partner for the future. And we look forward to working closely with Uzbekistan in 2012 and beyond. I wish our Uzbek friends a peaceful and prosperous New Year,” Ambassador concluded.
