Breast Cancer: How Uzbekistan is Changing Approaches to Treatment and Prevention

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Each year, over 4,000 women in Uzbekistan are diagnosed with breast cancer. Although the incidence rate is lower than in Europe or the U.S., improving early diagnosis and access to modern treatments has become a priority for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sergey Kamyshov, a medical expert and oncologist, discusses the successes and challenges of the country’s cancer care system said.

According to Dr. Sergey Kamyshov, one of the main areas of focus is screening. Thanks to mobile mammography units, women in Uzbekistan can benefit from early breast cancer detection, which significantly improves recovery outcomes. “Screening allows us to detect cancer at its earliest stages, greatly increasing the chances of successful treatment,” the expert explains.

Equally important is access to modern chemotherapy drugs. Over the past few years, funding for their procurement has increased tenfold, enabling patients to receive quality medical care. “We are equipped with modern targeted therapies, which greatly enhance treatment effectiveness,” Kamyshov adds.

Dr. Kamyshov emphasizes that many of the issues in oncology in Uzbekistan are being addressed at the state level. “The healthcare system is updating clinical protocols to align with international standards,” he says. This is critical for improving both the quality of treatment and patient satisfaction.

However, challenges remain, particularly in ensuring a steady supply of medications. “Occasionally, there are delays in deliveries due to unforeseen circumstances, but we are always looking for alternative solutions,” the oncologist explains.

Despite the challenges, Uzbekistan’s oncology care system is showing significant progress. The opening of a new oncology center, increased funding, and access to modern treatment methods create optimistic prospects for patients. “We are on the right track, and this gives hope that breast cancer in our country will be detected and treated at earlier stages,” Kamyshov concludes.
