‘Big Phil’s’ Bunyodkor on target
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan champions Bunyodkor are already halfway to achieving the AFC Champions League Group B points target set by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari after beating Al Wahda 2-1 on Tuesday.

Brazilian striker Denilson, who won the AFC Champions League with Korea Republic’s Pohang Steelers last year, scored in each half for Bunyodkor as Scolari’s side followed up last month’s win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad to maintain a 100% start.

“I am happy with six points from two games and our initial target is to first reach 12 points which I feel should be enough to advance to the next round,” said the former Brazil, Portugal and Chelsea manager, who is looking to better last year’s quarter-finals appearance.

“It is a good position to be in, but we will only relax after 12 points and hopefully it will come after four matches.”

Denilson headed home nine minutes before the break after Al Wahda goalkeeper Adel Al Hosani rushed out in attempt to collect Victor Karpenko’c cross only to present the Brazilian with an unguarded net.

And Denilson added a second from close range with five minutes remaining after Al Hosani failed to hold Jasur Hasanov’s shot.

“It was a tough game and Al Wahda played well initially, but once we scored we decided to preserve the lead,” added Scolari.

“It was our plan to score first and then defend and counter-attack. That is what we did and it is a good result.”

Saeed Al Kathiri grabbed a consolation for Al Wahda with a minute remaining, but despite seeing his side suffer a second consecutive defeat, Austrian coach Josef Hickersberger refused to throw in the towel after just two games.

Basheer Saeed had earlier headed wide for the visitors in the first half before striker Ismail Matar was denied by a brilliant save from Bunyodkor goalkeeper Ignatiy Nesterov.

Nesterov also denied Matar and Khalid Jalal and after Al Kathiri’s strike, the Bunyodkor custodian ensured the three points with a late save from Fernando Baiano. “We are not out even though our chances have slimmed considerably. We can still play for second place and there are a lot of games left,” he said. “We should have scored in the first 30 minutes but that was not to be as both Ismail Matar and Basheer Saeed missed.

“After they scored their first goal it became difficult for us as they took control of the game from then on. They defended very well.”
