Belarus to host ICT summit “Uniting CIS space”
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Information and communications technology must be harnessed to eradicate poverty, several delegates told the Second Committee (Economic and Financial), as the Committee concluded its consideration of information and communications technologies for development.

Belarus Permanent Representative to the UN Denis Zdorov said that Belarus will hold international summit on information-communication technologies “Uniting CIS space” on 26-27 October 2009.

He said the heads of the CIS states, representatives of leading international organizations, banks and companies, specializing in ICT, were invited to the summit.

Zdorov stated that . The United Nations system had a very important role to play in narrowing the technological gap and ensuring that information and communications technology instead became a factor for economic development.

The successful, broad application of information and communications technology depended on highly-developed infrastructure, and international cooperation was a key in this regard, he said. Belarus envoy supported a project on creation of Trans-Eurasian information super highway, which would give important impulse for cooperation in ICT.
