Asaka Automobile Plant turns 16
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Sixteen years ago, on 19 July 1996, Uz-Daewoo Auto (currently GM Uzbekistan) started serial production of Nexia, Damas and Tico automobiles.

Foundation of construction of automobile plant in Uzbekistan has been founded during the visit of the President Islam Karimov to South Korea in June 1992 during visit to Daewoo Motors.

After some time, the document on creation of joint venture was signed. In March 1993, Uzbek-South Korean joint venture Uz-Daewoo Auto was founded and tree year later, on 19 July 1996, Asaka Automobile Plant was opened.

In 1996, the enterprise launched production of three car models – Damas, Nexia, Tico – in seven modifications.

In the first year, the plant produced 25,300 cars and in 1997, it produced 64,300 cars. In the first half of 2012, GM Uzbekistan produced 108,638 cars, which grew by 2.4% year-on-year.

Five year later after launch, in 2011, the plant started production of Matiz cars and in August 2002 it launched capacities on production of Nexia DOHC cars. In December 2004, the enterprise started to produce Matiz in BEST modification. In February 2006, the plant launched production of Damas II.

In March 2008, the plant presented restyled Nexia car. On 21 February 2008, on the base of Asaka Automobile Plant, new venture GM Uzbekistan was founded. Uzavtosanoat and General Motors founded the venture. In the result of cooperation, the plant launched production of Epica and Captiva cars.

In November, the Asaka plant produced its 1 millionth car. It was Lacetti car. Asaka plant started to produce Spark cars from August 2010. The car is very popular among Uzbek people.

In February 2012, GM Uzbekistan started to produce Malibu cars. Soon, the plant is planning to launch production of new model of car.
