Sports 27/05/2009 Al Maged 0-0 Neftchi (1-3 pens): Al Maged pay the penalty
AFC Cup
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan’s Neftchi advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup after beating Syria’s Al Maged 3-1 on penalties after holding on for a goalless draw at Al Abbassiyin Stadium on Tuesday.

Group E winners Al Maged dominated the contest throughout but wasted a string of chances as they failed to find a way past Neftchi goalkeeper Yuriy Tsoy, who then saved a penalty in the shootout as Group A runners-up Neftchi advanced to the last eight.

Al Maged took just two minutes of the one-off last 16 showdown to create the first chance when Mohammad Al Zino saw his powerful drive from close range saved by Neftchi goalkeeper Tsoy.

The home side continued their early pressure and again went close four minutes later when Al Zino curled a free-kick just over the crossbar.

The pressure continued and Al Maged had further chances to take the lead after 15 minutes when Mouhanad Asaad was denied by Tsoy after trying his luck from outside the area before Al Zino continued to threaten as he fired just wide of the right upright 10 minutes later.

Al Maged’s hopes were dealt a blow on the half-hour mark when Samer Aouad had to be withdrawn after suffering an injury.

But his replacement Bashar Al Kaddour nearly opened the scoring three minutes after coming on but his shot drifted wide of the left-hand post.

Neftchi’s only chance of the first-half came two minutes before the break when Mansurjon Saidov followed a free-kick from the edge of the area with a powerful header over the crossbar.

Al Maged continued to be the better side in the second half and they should have scored 10 minutes after the break when Al Zino had a shot from outside the area but again his effort failed to find the target.

The best chance of the game came three minutes after the hour mark when Al Zino continued his superb form but his shot from outside the area was saved by Neftchi goalkeeper Tsoy.

Neftchi almost snatched a late winner against the run of play with 13 minutes remaining as Islom Tuhtahujaev headed over before Akmal Kholikov also headed over for the visitors in the last minute of normal time.

Extra-time failed to yield a real chance for either side and in the shoot-out Neftchi prevailed as Tsoy saved from Al Zino and Asaad and Al Kaddour missed from the spot.
