Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Director of the National Center for Human Rights, academician Akmal Saidov was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) for 2025-2028.

On 29 May, at the UN headquarters in New York, within the framework of the 40th session of the states parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), elections of 9 members of the HRC for 2025-2028 were held.

Representatives of 17 countries, including Uzbekistan, applied for 9 seats in the HRC. The applicants included representatives from Burundi, Georgia, Egypt, India, Spain, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Lithuania, Morocco, Paraguay, the Republic of Korea, North Macedonia, Togo, Croatia, Ethiopia and South Africa.

According to the results of secret voting, Akmal Saidov received the largest number of votes from the member countries of the ICCPR.

Uzbekistan was elected a member of the HRC for the first time, also becoming the first Central Asian country to join this body.

The Human Rights Committee is a UN body made up of independent experts who monitor the implementation of states parties to the ICCPR. There are 173 states participating in the pact. Uzbekistan acceded to this international document in 1995. The Committee’s activities are aimed at ensuring full respect for all civil and political human rights.
