AGMK to reconstruct Sary-Cheku mine
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Government of Uzbekistan adopted a decision on speeding up implementation of the project on reconstruction and expansion of Sary-Cheku mine, which is main resource base of Almalyk Mining and Metallurgy Combine (AGMK).

The project cost is US$23.5 million and it will be realized within 2010-2012. Earlier, it is planned to modernize mine in 2011.

The project allows to increase production efficiency at the mine by 1 million tonnes by 2015 to 5 million tonnes, gazeta.uz reported.

AGMK plans to purchase additional mining and transport equipment, reconstruct railways linking mine with ore mill within the project.

Russia’s Uralmash (excavators) and Rudgormash (drilling equipment) will supply equipment to AGMK.

AGMK will finance the project on its own resources and loans of the local commercial banks, the report said.

Development of Sary-Cheku mine was started in 1974. Its capacity is 4 million tonnes of ore a year. But, the mine production fell to 2 million tonnes due to old equipment.

AGMK is only copper producer in Uzbekistan. The combine develops copper- molybdenic and lead-zinc ores in Almalyk district. The enterprise produces copper, zinc, metal and lead concentrate, as well as other products. Share of AGMK in silver production makes up 90% and in gold – 20% in Uzbekistan.
