Afghanistan pays off debt for electricity to Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Afghanistan has fully paid for electricity supplies for 2021 and is making payments for electricity supplied in 2022. This was stated by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

The Ministry of Energy notes that Afghanistan has no debt for electricity supplies from Uzbekistan in 2021. In total, 2,151.3 million kWh of electricity was supplied to Afghanistan last year, for which the electricity company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat fully settled the bill.

In the current 2022, the volume of electricity supplies to Afghanistan is determined at 2,210.0 million kWh, according to the agreement between the National Electric Grids of Uzbekistan JSC and Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat.

“The calculations were made based on the demand of Afghanistan for electricity in January-June. To date, 770.2 million kWh have been delivered,” the ministry notes.

The agency noted that payments for electricity supplied this year from Uzbekistan are made by Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat on a systematic basis.

It should be noted that since 14 April 2022, the reception of electricity from Uzbekistan has been stopped due to the connection of Afghanistan to the energy system of Tajikistan in the summer season.

Since 2002, electricity has been supplied from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan. In the early years, electricity supplies from 10 kV transmission networks were carried out on the basis of the technological capabilities of contracts concluded with Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat.

Since 2009, after the construction and commissioning of two 220 kV transmission lines, up to 430 MW of electricity has been supplied to Afghanistan.
