Sports 06/11/2008 AFC U-19 Championship: Japan’s 10 goals lead the way

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Japan were on top of the goal-scoring charts at the end of the group stages of the AFC U-19 Championship 2008, knocking in 10 goals in three matches with Kensuke Nagai leading the way.

Nagai was the top scorer after the round-robin matches with four goals, thanks to his hat-trick in Japan’s 4-2 Group A victory over Iran.

In his team’s first match, against Yemen, he came on as a substitute and helped himself to one goal as Japan won 5-0.

Japan finished top of the group on goal difference after their final group match, against Saudi Arabia, finished 1-1.

Group C winners China were second in the team charts with nine goals, including one penalty. The Saudis scored seven goals while United Arab Emirates and Tajikistan had six each.

Four players were on three goals - Iraq’s Oudah Halboos Halboos Ali, Japan’s Kota Mizunuma, Tajikistan’s Samad Shohzukhurov and Liao Zhou, of China.

Hiroki Miyazawa scored the fastest goal yet in the tournament with his opening-minute strike against Iran.

China and DPR Kore from Group C, and Group D runners-up Uzbekistan boasted the best defensive records, each team conceding just one goal in three matches.
