Finance 16/07/2008 ADB to give US$120 mln to Kyrgyzstan in 2009

"We [ADB] have a strategy of cooperation with Kyrgyzstan for 2009- 2011. And the new economic policy that is being implemented in the country is for us a guide to cooperation. Together with donors we have agreed to improve coordination, and our aid will be coherent and constantly increasing," ADB’s Vice President Liqun Jin said at a meeting with Kyrgyz leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev on Tuesday, according to the statement.

"Next year [the financial aid] will reach US$120 million, 50% of which will be provided as a grant," said Liqun Jin.

Kyrgyzstan "can see the ADB as a reliable partner," he added. The bank "implements a flexible policy" in providing aid to the countries, which are severely affected by the global growth of food and energy prices.

"ADB will pay particular attention to the projects aimed at developing transport and communications, agriculture, industry and other areas of development, including regional cooperation," the bank’s vice president said.

For his part, Bakiyev said that Kyrgyzstan is very interested in implementing transport corridor projects. "The development of transport and communications will enable to transform Kyrgyzstan from a dead end into a transit country. This is why the ADB-supported projects for reconstruction of the Osh-Sary-Tash-Irkeshtam and the Bishkek-Naryn-Toryugart roads, as well as the project for construction of the railway between China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan are so important for us," he said.

Since 1994, the Bank has given Kyrgyzstan a total of US$670 million in 26 loans and five grants and US$40 million in funding for its 68 technical assistance projects.
