ADB Allocates US$233 Million for Modernization of Key Section of Corridor-2 in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US$233.1 million loan to Uzbekistan for the modernization of a key section of Corridor-2 of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) program.
The project aims to enhance regional transport connectivity, reduce travel time, improve road safety, and increase infrastructure resilience to climate change in the country’s western regions.
The program involves the reconstruction of approximately 87 kilometers of the G‘uzar–Bukhara–Nukus–Beyneu highway (A380) in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, including the construction of a new 75-kilometer bypass road (Turtkul–Ellikkala–Beruniy) and the reconstruction of a 12-kilometer section of the existing route.
The project incorporates climate-resilient solutions, such as cement-concrete pavement, reinforced embankments, and improved drainage systems designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
Kanokpan Lao-Araya, Director of the ADB Country Office in Uzbekistan, noted that the project will strengthen Uzbekistan’s role as a regional transit hub and support inclusive economic growth in Karakalpakstan. The implementation of intelligent transport systems and automated axle load control will enhance safety and traffic efficiency. Along the corridor, five rest and service areas are planned, including charging stations for electric vehicles and secure facilities for women.
The total project cost is estimated at US$293.7 million, of which US$60.6 million will be provided by the Government of Uzbekistan. The project aligns with the country’s development strategy through 2030 and ADB priorities, including climate change resilience, gender equality, and regional integration.
2025 marks the 30th anniversary of ADB-Uzbekistan partnership. Since joining the bank in 1995, Uzbekistan has received loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling around US$14.3 billion.
Established in 1966, the Asian Development Bank promotes sustainable growth in the Asia-Pacific region through innovative financial instruments and strategic partnerships. The bank comprises 69 member countries, 50 of which are located in the region.
