2018-2022 dynamic economic growth ensured in 8 regions of the country

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Experts from the Institute for Forecasting and Macroeconomic Research (IPMI) analyzed the growth dynamics of the gross regional product (GRP) across the territories of Uzbekistan for 2018-2022.

The country’s regional policy has undergone large-scale reforms over the past five years. A feature of the regional policy of this period was the shift in emphasis in addressing issues of socio-economic development of territories from the level of regions to the level of cities, districts and mahallas, in particular, an assessment of the existing potential, as well as prospects and growth drivers.

All this gave positive results, as evidenced by the fact that in 2018-2022, dynamic economic growth was ensured in 8 regions of the country (GRP growth is 131.9-154.4%).

Firstly, the Andijan, Tashkent, Navoi regions, the stabilization of economic development in the post-pandemic period (2021-2022) was ensured in a short time.

Secondly, tangible results have been achieved in the economic growth of Namangan, Ferghana, Jizzakh

  regions (GRP growth by 1.3 times, which is higher than the republican parameter) by increasing the capacity for the production of finished textile products and clothing, rubber and plastic, building materials, as well as the development of medium-high-tech activities (production of electronic and optical devices, electrical equipment, development of informatization and communication services, education, etc.).

What sectors have made a significant contribution to the growth of the regions’ GRP?

- the industrial sector (based on the analysis of the average annual growth of GRP) was significant in ensuring the growth of GRP in Andijan, Navoi, Namangan, Syrdarya, Tashkent regions;

- the agricultural sector retains its advantage in the growth of GRP in Bukhara, Jizzakh regions and the Republic of Karakalpakstan;

- the service sector is noted as the leading industry in ensuring the growth of GRP in Khorezm, Samarkand, Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya and Fergana regions.

In general, in the Development Strategy of New Uzbekistan for 2022-2026, one of the goals of accelerated development of the national economy and ensuring high growth rates is an increase in the volume of the regional economy by 1.4-1.6 times. This, in turn, provides for the further implementation of measures to ensure a balanced development of the regions, stimulate the development of cities and districts, improve the urbanization policy, and strengthen the role of the mahalla institution.
