Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A tragic plane crash at Muana Airport, South Korea, claimed the lives of 179 people, according to Reuters. The Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air, on a flight from Bangkok, overshot the runway during landing and crashed into a barrier. Of the 181 people onboard, only two survived.
Preliminary reports indicate the incident was caused by a bird strike during landing, which led to landing gear failure and loss of control of the aircraft. Footage aired by local broadcaster MBC shows smoke coming from the engines during landing, followed by the plane catching fire. The fire reportedly originated from the tail section.
Among the passengers were 173 South Korean nationals, two Thai citizens, and six crew members. According to Yonhap News Agency, the survivors include one passenger and one crew member. Initially, 29 fatalities were reported in the tail section, but the death toll later rose to 62 and eventually reached 179 confirmed fatalities.
Acting President Choi Sang Mok has ordered the immediate formation of a response task force to address the disaster. Choi currently serves as the interim leader of the nation following the suspension of former President Han Duck-soo amid a political crisis.
All domestic and international flights at Muana Airport, located 288 kilometers from Seoul, have been canceled in the aftermath of the crash.
