Bogbonli Mosque is restored in Khiva with the financial support from the EU

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The European Union, UNESCO and the Government of Uzbekistan have successfully opened the restored historic Bogbonli Mosque in Khiva.

The initiative is part of the EU funded "Silk Roads Heritage Corridors in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Iran - International Dimension of the European Year of Cultural Heritage" project implemented by UNESCO. The project aimed to reinforce and stabilize the mosque’s structure, preserving its existing wooden elements, with the support of local partners and international experts.

Bogbonli Mosque, located in the World Heritage Property of Ichan Kala, Khiva, was built in the 19th century and features a mosque, courtyard, and entrance rooms. The mosque also boasts a 14th-century aivan with two wooden columns and a painted ceiling, as well as intricate building inscriptions, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of local artisans.

"The EU remains deeply committed to preserving cultural heritage as a crucial part of our shared heritage and identity, while encouraging responsible and sustainable tourism practices. In Uzbekistan, we look forward to working with local communities and authorities to safeguard their rich cultural heritage for future generations," said, H.E. Charlotte Adriaen, the EU Ambassador to Uzbekistan.

“UNESCO is dedicated to safeguarding the cultural heritage of Khiva, a magnificent testimony to Uzbekistan’s rich history and cultural diversity. The preservation of such sites faces challenges, but we are confident that with the right partnerships and investments, they can also present bright opportunities for local communities, create jobs and contribute to the country’s economy, even further. “ said Sara Noshadi, UNESCO Representative in Uzbekistan.
