Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- First Deputy Director of the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies (ISMI) under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Akromjon Nematov shared this assessment during an Uzbek-Pakistani video conference on the topic: "Uzbekistan - Pakistan: prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation."
According to Akromjon Nematov, the past summit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan created a new starting point in Uzbek-Pakistani relations, traditionally based on the principles of high mutual understanding, deep respect and sincere friendship.
This is evidenced by the issues at the center of the bilateral agenda on signing an agreement on preferential trade, resuming air traffic, simplifying the visa regime and promoting priority transport projects.
The practical implementation of these plans will contribute to the expansion of the economic component of cooperation, which already has recently shown an upward trajectory of growth. In particular, there is a high interest of Pakistani business circles in the dynamically growing Uzbek market, which is manifested in the expansion of the presence of Pakistani business in Uzbekistan. In the period from 2016 to 2020, the number of enterprises with Pakistani capital operating in Uzbekistan increased 2.5 times, amounting to 146 units.
Tashkent and Islamabad are interested in strengthening industrial cooperation in such areas as light industry, paper production, leather goods, food and pharmaceutical products.
At the same time, cooperation in the tourism sector has received a new dynamic of development, which is regarded as an additional accelerator for building up cultural and humanitarian ties. Over the past 4 years, the number of Pakistani tourists visiting Uzbekistan has increased tenfold. This shows the natural high interest of the Pakistani population in the cultural and historical sights of our country.
It was especially emphasized that on the basis of the speeches made by the heads of state, one can see their firm intention to construct a stable model of mutually beneficial ties, implying the full use of the existing potential of cooperation.
Summarizing all these positive trends, the representative of the ISMI noted with satisfaction that today Tashkent and Islamabad have actually taken a course towards reanimating historical ties. The practical implementation of these goals can serve as an additional source of economic growth and an increase in the well-being of the population of both states.
The event, organized on 15 April by the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, together with the Center for Global and Strategic Studies of Pakistan, was attended by prominent scientists and experts from leading research institutes and think tanks of the two countries.
