Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- During the visit of the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva in Switzerland, a meeting was held with the UN Deputy Secretary General, Director General of the United Nations Office in Geneva Tatiana Valovaya.
Tatiana Valovaya congratulated Uzbekistan on its election to the UN Human Rights Council, noted that this is an important milestone in the country’s foreign and domestic policy and, in fact, a reflection of the country’s strong commitment to protecting and further promoting human rights.
- The UN Office in Geneva is closely following the large-scale reforms in the Republic of Uzbekistan, carried out under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. They are distinguished by their consistency, dynamism and efficiency, which will undoubtedly bring positive results for your people,” said the Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Valovaya welcomed the initiatives of the head of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, voiced during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, including on enhancing the role of parliaments, calling it an opportunity for the legislative authorities of various countries not only to rethink their role in the development of states, but also to increase their responsibility to their voters for the decisions made that affect the fate of peoples. In her opinion, this is a timely initiative, since new global threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic, can have a negative impact on countries’ achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. And here the role of parliaments is more important than ever.
The UN Deputy Secretary General expressed confidence that the proposal of the President of Uzbekistan will be supported by the absolute majority of foreign parliamentarians, since it is consonant with their desire to benefit their peoples.
In this regard, it was proposed to actively use the existing sites of the UN Office in Geneva for further promotion and implementation of these initiatives. One such platform is the SDG Lab, where countries, together with international organizations, the private sector and academia, study and propose to develop multi-sectoral collaboration to achieve the SDGs.
Tatiana Valovaya invited the head of the upper chamber of the Uzbek parliament Tanzila Narbayeva to speak at a special meeting of the SDG Lab dedicated to the initiatives of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, announced during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly next year.
In turn, the UN Deputy Secretary General accepted the invitation to take part and speak at the International Web Forum "Children’s Rights to Education: Relevance, Continuity and Innovation in a Pandemic", organized by the International Public Fund "Zamin" in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on 19 November 2020.
Following the meeting, agreements were reached on other issues.
