UN event provides information on combating human trafficking in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A high-level event dedicated to the celebration of the International Day against Trafficking in Human Beings established by a resolution of the General Assembly in February 2014 was held at the UN headquarters in the format of a videoconference, Dunyo news agency reported.
The event was organized by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime Control (UNODC) together with the Belarus Mission to the UN. It was attended by the leadership of UNODC and UN Women, regional and specialized UN agencies, representatives of expert circles, non-governmental organizations, as well as permanent representatives of member states to the UN.
During the meeting, the commitment of the member states to the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime on Trafficking in Persons and its Protocol on Prevention, Suppression and Punishment, especially in relation to women and children, as well as the 10th anniversary of the UN Global Plan of Action and established in 2010 by the UN Voluntary Trust Fund in this direction.
During the event, an exchange of views took place on strengthening cooperation between law enforcement agencies and law enforcement agencies of the Group’s countries, improving the potential of their interagency cooperation and developing a reliable protection system.
Bakhtiyor Ibragimov, Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the UN, spoke at the event. He acquainted the participants with the measures taken by the government of our country to combat human trafficking. Particular attention was paid to the fact that, according to the decree of the President of Uzbekistan, the Office of the National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons and Forced Labor was established, which provides the Head of State with an annual report on the current situation in the country and the world in this area, the efforts being made to protect and punish those responsible for similar crimes.
Information was also provided on the activities of the current National Commission on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and the Use of Forced Labor, headed by the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, designed to coordinate efforts at the national and regional levels of self-government bodies, NGOs and others in order to ensure their effectiveness and coordinated interaction.
The important role of the ongoing nationwide campaigns to broadly inform the public about the measures being taken, as well as the activities of the modern center for the reintegration of victims of human trafficking, established in Tashkent, in which qualified doctors, lawyers, psychologists and other experts provide them with comprehensive assistance in social adaptation, were noted.
It should be noted that the Group of Friends United Against Trafficking in Human Beings consists of 23 UN member states, including Egypt, Bangladesh, Bahrain, India, Qatar, UAE, Singapore, Ecuador and other countries. In the CIS, its members are the states of Central Asia, Belarus and Russia.
The main objectives of this informal voluntary association of open-ended member states are to help revitalize and strengthen the global fight against trafficking in persons, strive to strengthen the role of the UN and promote closer coordination and coherence of efforts in this area, including through the development and implementation of a global plan actions to combat human trafficking.
