Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 13 February 2020, as part of a visit to the UK by the First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, director of the National Center for Human Rights, Academician Akmal Saidov, a round table was held at the Embassy of Uzbekistan on the Address from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to parliament.
The event was attended by representatives of socio-political, business and scientific-educational circles of the UK, as well as compatriots and students studying in British universities.
Akmal Saidov revealed in detail the main provisions of the Address of the head of state, which serves as a kind of “road map” for the implementation of the priority strategic tasks facing Uzbekistan. It was noted that the document was addressed not only to the parliament, but also to the entire people of Uzbekistan, as well as to the international community.
Particular attention was paid to enhancing the role of parliament in the implementation of the objectives of the Strategy for Action, as well as the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The innovative initiatives voiced in the Address highlighted the creation of legislative and institutional frameworks for achieving the SDGs.
Emphasis was also placed on deepening cooperation with foreign partners in the implementation of international initiatives, including at the UN level. In particular, in the development and adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Youth, the active participation of Uzbekistan in the activities of the UN Human Rights Council.
The forum participants noted the conceptual nature of the Message, which not only analyzed such sensitive problems and challenges as the fight against corruption, poverty reduction, citizenship, but also identified ways to solve them.
Initiatives to create a special anti-corruption body accountable to the President and Parliament, as well as the Public Chamber, designed to play the role of a bridge between the population and the state, were positively evaluated. The relevance of the country’s leader’s proposals to further strengthen the independence of the media, strengthen parliamentary control and increase the status and influence of local representative bodies was noted.
Representatives of British business circles participating in the round table drew particular attention to the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan to hold the first Tashkent International Investment Forum, which will be held on March 5-6. It was noted that the interest of a significant number of British businessmen in participating in the forum indicates a growing confidence in the changes in Uzbekistan, a real improvement in the business and investment climate.
In general, the participants in the round table expressed confidence that the Address of the President of Uzbekistan opens up new opportunities for deepening the Uzbek-British bilateral cooperation in all areas, including through inter-parliamentary cooperation.
