Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 2 December 2019, the meeting of the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sodik Safoev with a delegation of the IPA CIS long-term mission led by the Acting Director of the International Institute for Monitoring the Development of Democracy, Parliamentarism and Observance of Electoral Rights of Citizens of States -participants of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Elena Goloulina took place.
The IPA CIS long-term mission has actually begun observing the parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan since the announcement of the start of the election campaign by tracking the information space.
Speaking about cooperation with the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, during the meeting it was noted that Uzbekistan resumed participation in this authoritative structure, in which the delegation of our republic took an active part in the 50th anniversary meeting.
During the meeting, Mr. Safoev emphasized that the upcoming elections are intended to demonstrate to the international community the irreversibility of the reforms taking place in the country. It is especially noted that the socio-political situation that has developed in recent years and the changed consciousness of people requires new approaches to organizing elections, which actualizes the issue of cooperation with international organizations, including the IPA CIS. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of long-term observers from the IPA CIS, who for the first time take part in elections.
In Uzbekistan, everything is being done to conduct the upcoming elections at a high organizational level in accordance with democratic standards. Suffice it to say that 90% of the recommendations made by international observers at the last election, including the missions of observers of the OSCE, the CIS and other authoritative international institutions, are implemented in national legislation.
International observers positively evaluated the codification of the electoral law, emphasized that the wide public discussion of the Electoral Code within the country and its international expertise by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the OSCE / ODIHR indicate the open character of the adoption of this document and full compliance with its democratic standards.
Representatives of the IPA CIS long-term mission noted that during the observation process, the object of studying the IPA CIS long-term mission will be the activities of the Central Election Commission and election commissions, political parties, the media and civil society institutions.
