Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AGMK) intends to significantly increase the production of copper and non-ferrous metals by 2023. This will happen thanks to the implementation of six major projects to modernize production at the smelter, the company's press service said.
The AGMK smelter is unique not only on the scale of Uzbekistan, but is also one of the largest such facilities in the world. Here, cathode copper is obtained from copper sulfide concentrate, precious metals - gold and silver, rare metals - rhenium, molybdenum, selenium, tellurium, as well as sulfuric acid and vitriol.
This year, a long-term record was broken at the enterprise - the monthly production of cathode copper exceeded 13 thousand tons. Prior to this, the maximum figure was 12860 tons, and it was set in March back in 1985.
The smelter has already begun work under the program of modernization, technical and technological re-equipment. In the near future, it is planned to implement six projects here that will completely restart the plant's production. In particular, it is planned to build a new Vanyukov furnace with a capacity of 120 thousand tons of cathode copper. Now one such furnace is successfully operating at the plant, but with a capacity of 70 thousand tons, it was launched in 2016.
“It was not by chance that we decided to modernize production through the construction of another Vanyukov furnace. It was chosen to maintain the identity of the process, and besides, there was interchangeability of the two furnaces. In parallel with this process, the construction of an oxygen station with a working life of 25 -40 thousand hours and an oxygen purity of 92-98%," said Bakhtiyar Vakkasov, director of the AGMK smelter.
The plant also planned the construction of the fifth sulfuric acid workshop with equipment from the German company Outotek GmbH. Its production capacity will be 600 thousand tons of acid sulfate.
Further, according to Vakkasov, the stage of modernization of the converter-acid redistribution of metallurgical production will follow, in particular, the construction of the fifth converter furnace and increasing the capacity from 75 to 100 thousand tons of black copper will be discussed. The new furnace will be equipped with modern gas purification electrostatic precipitators.
“As part of the modernization of the smelter, two anode furnaces will also be built with the participation of Glencore, their capacity will be 250 tons each. Another important stage of technical re-equipment is the construction of a new copper electrolysis workshop with a capacity of 250 thousand tons of cathode copper,” the source said.
All these projects will already allow in 2023 to produce 250 thousand tons of cathode copper and 120 thousand tons of metallic zinc per year, as well as significantly increase the production of precious and rare metals, create a thousand new jobs.
Currently, the plant continues to select potential project executors who are selected on a competitive basis.
