Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- As part of the commemoration of the World Children’s Day, children interacted with decision makers of the United Nations in Uzbekistan. UNICEF organized this opportunity to give a chance to girls and boys to shine a spotlight on their most pressing issues and discuss how the UN can support them in fulfilling their aspirations and addressing their needs.
This interaction also serves as an opportunity for the UN staff to discuss how children and young people can make a meaningful contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Child Rights are at the heart of UNICEF’s mandate and our identity. Our values reflect the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child: that every child should survive and develop, never suffer discrimination, have decisions made in their best interests and have a right to participate and be heard”, said Sascha Graumann, Representative, UNICEF Uzbekistan. “Your voice matters for us”, he added.
On the same day, children engaged with the senior management of Hyatt Regency hotel in Tashkent. They spoke about their needs, dreams and inspirations. They discussed how private companies could support children and young people in fulfilling their rights.
"It was a great experience listening to children of Uzbekistan. They were full of energy and enthusiasm. We were impressed with their ideas, and I believe that young people are ready to drive this country into its future," said Mr. Puneet Tandon, General Manager of Hyatt Regency, Tashkent. "Hyatt is committed to protecting global environment, and we know that children will be most affected. They are the future. We must give them a better world. We owe it to them," he added.
World Children’s Day is celebrated on 20 November every year to mark the signing of the Convention of the Rights of the Child. This year – the 30th anniversary is extra special, as leaders of the world are reaffirming their commitment to children on this day.
Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly, has helped to transform children’s lives. Thirty years on, child rights have not changed, but childhood has changed. The rise of digital technology, changes in the environment, prolonged conflicts and mass migration are changing childhood. Today’s children face new threats to their rights, but they also have new opportunities to realize their rights.
