Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A round-table discussion was held at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Berlin with the participation of representatives of socio-political and expert circles in Germany, dedicated to the modern development of Uzbekistan and the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country, Dunyo reported.
Particular attention was focused on information on large-scale reforms carried out at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the country’s new foreign policy, including initiatives of regional and international importance.
The participants of the event also got acquainted with detailed information on the preparations for the elections to the lower house of the country’s parliament, scheduled for 22 December 2019. It was separately noted that the upcoming elections will be fundamentally different from the previous ones and will be held on the basis of a conceptually new Electoral Code of Uzbekistan developed jointly with the OSCE Office for Democratic Freedoms and Human Rights and the Venice Commission.
Attention is drawn to the necessary conditions for the active participation in the elections of all citizens of the republic who are abroad. The participants in the round table also got acquainted with the legislative, organizational, technical and other aspects of preparing and conducting the electoral cycle in the new conditions.
Some of the participants shared their views on the modern development of our country.
Albert Vejle, Member of the German Bundestag from the Christian Democratic Union:
- The regional policy pursued by Uzbekistan contributes to the strengthening of friendly ties and mutually beneficial cooperation in Central Asia. We are confident that Uzbekistan, with its constructive policies, will play a key role in bringing the Central Asian region closer to Europe and strengthening the region’s importance as a bridge to Asia. In this regard, we want to develop our relations with Uzbekistan, including as part of the implementation of the EU Strategy for Central Asia. Evidence of this was the visit of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Germany in January this year, which was a great success.
We intend to fully support Uzbekistan at the transitional stage of its development, contributing to the successful implementation of the reform process. We also want to assist, in particular, in such areas as sustainable development, improving healthcare and the judicial system, and strengthening statehood. Favorable prospects are opening up for expanding trade and economic ties. In general, traditionally friendly relations are the basis for the further development of cooperation between our countries.
We are watching with great interest the preparations for the parliamentary elections and hope that after the formation of the new composition of the Oliy Majlis, the fruitful cooperation of our countries will rise to a new level.
Karina Konrad, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Group “Germany - Central Asia”, deputy of the Bundestag from the Free Democratic Party of Germany:
- I have fond memories of the time when I visited your country as part of our parliamentary delegation in November 2018. During the trip, I personally saw the dynamic development of the republic and learned about its rich historical and cultural heritage. I was very impressed with the variety of magnificent traditions and customs of the Uzbek people.
Today, Uzbekistan is in a process of change and these positive changes are being implemented thanks to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Given these trends and the country’s huge potential in various fields, we in the Bundestag advocate closer cooperation with Uzbekistan.
In the framework of inter-parliamentary cooperation, we invited the Uzbek parliamentarians to Germany, we maintain constant contacts, exchange opinions on pressing issues of the current agenda.
Along with this, there is a growing interest of the business community in cooperation with Uzbek partners. An example of this is the successful interaction with German companies such as Knauf, MAN, Klaas and many others. We hope to further strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
I hope that in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan on 22 December, Uzbek citizens will vote for energetic, modern and patriotic deputies, and Uzbek-German multifaceted relations will continue to be strengthened.
Colin Durkop, Chairman of the German-Uzbek Society:
- Based on the results of a recent trip to Uzbekistan, I can note the dynamic changes taking place in the country. Thanks to these changes and the intensification of Uzbek-German relations, the German-Uzbek society received new inspiration. This year, our organization celebrates its 25th anniversary, and it is during this period that we celebrate a new dynamic in bilateral relations. Such a positive development of relations between our countries entrusts us with new tasks for the further strengthening of friendly relations in the cultural, humanitarian, scientific and economic fields.
Our society intends to continue to carry out activities aimed at familiarizing the German public with the culture and traditions of the Uzbek people, to actively contribute to strengthening exchanges between schoolchildren and young people, and to maintain partnerships between the twin cities of Bukhara and Bonn. Our organization is also promoting a platform for intercultural exchange between citizens of Uzbekistan based in Germany.
The German press periodically publishes information on the elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan scheduled for December 22. We are watching with interest the preparations for this important event and wish it successful, and we also hope that the ongoing reforms will continue along the path of openness and building a civil society.
Peter Shpari, Managing Member of the Board of the Company for the Promotion of Competitiveness:
- We are interested in security, stability, peace and order reigning in the Central Asian region. In this context, we welcome the fact that Uzbekistan, under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, has been pursuing a consistent regional policy aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and cooperation between neighboring countries.
Today, Uzbekistan can rightfully be called the locomotive of Central Asian integration, which makes the region as a whole interesting for foreign investors, including German.
Now we are witnessing how summits contribute to the strengthening of bilateral relations between our countries. For our part, we will continue to make every possible effort to ensure that Uzbekistan, located in the center of the Silk Road, takes its rightful place as a bridge connecting the West and the East.
