Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Senior Energy Ministers from across Central Asia have today signed a ten-point Ministerial declaration committing their countries to a shared 2030 Energy Strategy and to collaborate on fulfilling United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7, which pledges “affordable and clean energy” by 2030.
The signing of the declaration took place at the first Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Energy Ministers Dialogue (“the Dialogue”) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Dialogue was organized by the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan together with the Asian Development Bank under the auspices of CAREC, a partnership of 11 countries and development partners working together to promote development through cooperation.
Representatives from CAREC member states in Tashkent included Energy Ministers from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Turkey. The Ministers agreed and signed the ten-point declaration ahead of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit, to be held in New York next week (24-25 September).
As part of the declaration, signatories committed to jointly implementing a new CAREC 2030 Energy Strategy, developed in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank. The Strategy’s aim is to create reliable, stable, sustainable and reformed energy markets in the region by 2030, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Signatory nations also committed to:
Doubling electricity generation from solar and wind energy by 2023;
Implementing reforms to create an investor-friendly regulatory framework to encourage greater private sector investment;
Creating CAREC-centered regional financing mechanisms;
Empowering women – who are under-represented in the CAREC region energy sector – by signing up to the principles of the ‘Equal by 30’ campaign:
The campaign lobbies for equal pay, equal leadership, and equal opportunities for women by 2030
Mr. Alisher Sultanov, Energy Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, said:
“There has been huge ambition on display today by governments in the Central Asia region. We have formalized our commitment to a financially and environmentally sustainable energy industry. We look forward to working with fellow CAREC region states and international sources of capital to achieve our goals.”
