Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, headed by First Deputy Foreign Minister Ilkhom Nematov, has been participating in the Global Conference on Programming the Green Climate Fund in Songdo (Republic of Korea).
Before the conference, a brief meeting was held between First Deputy Foreign Minister Ilkhom Nematov and former UN Secretary General, Chairman of the Global Green Institute (GGGI) Ban Ki-moon. The head of the Uzbek delegation conveyed to Ban Ki-moon the warm greetings and best wishes of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Ban Ki-moon, in turn, praised the importance attached by the head of Uzbekistan to the Aral Sea problem and climate change in the world, as well as the large-scale measures taken in the area of ecological disaster to eliminate the consequences and restore vegetation. He apologized that he could not hold a separate meeting in connection with his visit to Mongolia, and said that he had instructed his deputy, Ambassador Kim Hyo-un and the Deputy Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund, Javier Monsanares, to thoroughly discuss Uzbekistan’s projects on the Aral issue.
At a representative conference, which was attended by delegations from more than 140 countries, a representative of the Uzbek delegation spoke on 21 August. He emphasized that combating the effects of climate change and adaptation issues are an integral part of the agenda of the Government of Uzbekistan.
In the speech, the attention of the conference participants was drawn to the signing by our country in 1993 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement in December last year. In order to fulfill the obligations under the Paris Agreement, Uzbekistan has developed a Strategy for the transition of the republic to a "green economy", aimed at the consistent modernization of industry, improving energy efficiency and energy conservation in key sectors of the economy. A special role in the process of the country’s transition to a "green economy", especially its energy sector, is played by the development of renewable energy sources.
It was emphasized that "by 2025, it is planned to bring the share of renewable energy sources in the structure of generating energy capacities to 20%."
Attention was also drawn to the problem of the drying out of the Aral Sea. It was emphasized that “in the history of civilization there has not been such a case when a whole sea disappeared before the eyes of one generation. Today, this catastrophe has grown beyond the borders of the region, turning into a global problem, and requires close attention of international organizations, politicians, scientists and experts from around the world. ”
The delegates were interested in the steps taken in Uzbekistan to mitigate the consequences of the environmental catastrophe. In particular, in the framework of the new State program launched in 2018 to combat the consequences of the Aral Sea crisis, from December last year to the present, large-scale work has been carried out in Uzbekistan to afforestation on the drained bottom of the Aral Sea with an area of 500 thousand hectares.
In addition, in October last year, the Aral Sea International Innovation Center was established under saline conditions under the President of the Republic, and in November 2018, under the auspices of the United Nations Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea region, as well as the Aral Sea Basin Innovation Support Fund, which will engage in the cultivation of seedlings of desert and fodder plants.
These new structures were created with the aim of introducing environmentally friendly technologies, the principles of a green economy, energy and water saving technologies in the Aral Sea region, which are designed to prevent further desertification and environmental migration in a changing climate.
In this regard, the Uzbek side called on international partners to establish close cooperation with these funds for the implementation of joint innovative projects in the Aral Sea region. Uzbekistan is fully aware of the need to establish effective international cooperation to realize the aspirations to combat climate change and address the consequences of the Aral Sea disaster.
