Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 15-16 April 2019, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Dilshod Ahatov visited Romania, which chairs the first half of the European Union, on a working visit.
The Uzbek delegation took part in the high-level conference on Central Asia “Interconnectedness for sustainable development”, held in the framework of the Romanian EU presidency.
Speaking at the conference, the head of the delegation of Uzbekistan expressed confidence that the updated EU Strategy for Central Asia, which is currently being actively worked on, will help create effective and reliable mechanisms for developing relations between the two regions and bringing them to a qualitatively new level, increasing investment flows , strengthening the competitiveness of economies and the removal of barriers to the movement of goods, services and people.
The necessity of developing programs and projects of the European Union of a regional orientation with the wide involvement of the countries of Central Asia, which will allow for ensuring mutual consideration of interests, was noted.
Special attention was paid to the prospects for the development of multifaceted cooperation in trade, economic and investment spheres, in which Uzbekistan and the EU are interested. It was emphasized that the enormous untapped potential available would provide European businesses with the opportunity to enter the Central Asian market, including Afghanistan, with almost 100 million people. Also, attention was focused on the implementation of projects for the development of transport corridors linking the EU and Central Asia.
As part of their stay in Bucharest, the Uzbek delegation also held meetings with State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania Danut Neculaescu and State Secretary of the Ministry of Small and Medium-Sized Business, Trade and Business Environment Gabriela Voicilă and management of Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Uzbek officials also held talks with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Marcin Pshidach, EU Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian and the UN Deputy Secretary General, the Executive Secretary of the European Economic Commission Olga Algaerova. At the talks, practical issues of further development of bilateral relations were discussed.
