Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Central Election Commission and the Women’s Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed an agreement on cooperation on 16 April 2019. The result of this step can be a significant increase in the number of female deputies.
The Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Chairperson of the Women’s Committee Tanzila Narbaeva signed the agreement.
In December 2019, elections for parliament and representative local authorities will be held in the country. In the months remaining before this event, the Women’s Committee, with the involvement of CEC resources, political parties, and its own broad representation, plans to seriously work to increase the number of women deputies in the future parliament.
In their speeches at the signing ceremony of the Agreement, Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov and Tanzila Narbaeva noted that for the real quantitative and qualitative growth of women’s parliamentarism in Uzbekistan at present there are all the necessary conditions. Women constitute half of the country’s population, they are invariably active in any organizational arrangements, take at least polling stations during previous elections, where women always responsibly and carefully approach the organization of the electoral process, creating all conditions for this.
As the head of the department for raising the socio-political activity of women of the Women’s Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan Dilorom Kuzieva noted in an interview, today women constitute only 15% of the total number of parliamentarians in parliament. And this is despite the fact that the electoral legislation provides for a 30% quota for nominating women candidates running for the Legislative Chamber.
“Today we signed the Agreement in order to ensure that the candidates for women running for parliament were presented on an equal basis with men - 50%. The Women’s Committee for the upcoming elections forms a reserve from among the active women, we are working to improve their leadership skills, political knowledge, knowledge in the area of transformations that occur in our country. This work is being done jointly with political parties so that candidates ready for the upcoming serious work should run in the upcoming parliamentary elections,” Kuzieva said.
In addition to working with potential candidates for deputies, the Women’s Committee is increasing its activity in the field of increasing knowledge in the field of elections and among women who will elect. More than 10 thousand specialists work in the structure of the Committee of Women throughout the country. Increasing their knowledge in the sphere of politics, electoral law, the Women’s Committee thereby widely disseminates this knowledge.
“Our specialists on the ground - they work directly with families and their knowledge can play an important role in ensuring that throughout Uzbekistan, in the most remote regions, women of Uzbekistan take an active part in the electoral process, increasing the number of our women not only among members of parliament, but also in the composition of leaders of different levels, ” Kuzieva stressed.
The purpose of the work of the Women’s Committee in this direction is to prepare such candidates from among the women who, if elected, will really be able to solve this or that problem, work for the good of the people and the country’s prosperity. There is no doubt that the women of Uzbekistan, who today have time to be both the pillar of the family and real professionals in their field, will be able to adequately represent the interests of their voters as deputies of any level.
